La Sagrada Familia

This façade, oriented to the east and the rising sun, is dedicated to the birth of Jesus and his life. It is located at Marina Street.
The ground plans of the bell-towers are squared and the diagonal of these plans goes perpendicular to the façade, creating in their confluence a tripartite entrance with three portals dedicated to the three Christian virtues: Hope, Faith and Charity.
Antoni Gaudí is the prime example of global architecture. In his works there is no difference between structures and decoration, you cannot tell when one finishes and starts the other. We must find the explanation for this brilliant creativity in his life, his love for the land, his mysticism and faith. That's for sure that never again somebody has been able to reproduce natural shapes -which are part of our world from its genesis- with the magnificence and luxury developed by Gaudí.
In 1910, again Gaudí goes through a hard convalescence: now the Malta fever confines him to bed, and he moves to Vic and to Puigcerdà to rest. There he writes his first will. Despite his illness, he still has the strength to design the Passion façade and to celebrate the centenary of the Catalan philosopher Jaume Balmes in Vic.
After Gaudí is recovered from his illness and comes back to work, start the lean years for the Temple of the Sagrada Família. The deficit threatens the construction; however, Gaudí is against suspending the works and spends most of his time in the workshops of the Temple, to whom he devoted the last years of his life. In order to raise funds, he became the main apostle of the construction, and tirelessly explained it in detail to anybody that would visit it. Occasionally he would personally go out into the street to raise funds among the passers-by.

The Goodbye

His time came while he was polishing the structural and decorative shapes of the Temple de la Sagrada Família.
Antoni Gaudí died in June the 10th, 1926 in Barcelona, run over by a streetcar. His funeral was attended by crowds of people, and his body was buried in the crypt of the Temple, to which he had devoted his life.
However, the spirit of Gaudí is still among us. This universal Catalan left us his rich art embellishing the world, and the legacy of a great unfinished work that is now in our hands.
