Formerly known as Keawa'ula Beach ("the red harbour") because of the large swarms of squid that appeared to turn the water red in sunlight.
Japanese workers from Wai'anae sugar plantations frequented the area for pole fishing. These workers were predominantly from Yokohama in Japan.
This is the last stretch of sandy coastline before Kaena Point on the Leeward Coast.
The park area is undeveloped and treacherous waters abound so swimmers should be very cautious.
