Loren,
Most buildings are now constructed of Douglas fir which has been treated with preservatives to fend of constant attack by termites. Older buldings did not benefit from this treatment. Much of Hawaii's native forests have been decimated. The most beautiful of all native woods, Koa (Acacia) is limited in supply and used primarily for furniture.

There appear to be many wood frame buildings. What type of wood
is ( or was ) used for these? Forgive me, fo not knowing so much,
but are there Hemlock or Fir forests? ?
