Kapa, Hawaiian Cloth (Tapa) - Bishop Museum

Before the arrival of Europeans ancient Hawaiians used the bark of a type of mulberry plant to create the equivalent of cloth.
The designs imbedded in the tapa are unique to the island groups across the Pacific.
To the trained eye you can identify the island group based on the designs in the tapa.
