Here we are again at the gas holders in St. Albans.
There are four or five sections that telescope together.
When I was in the Fire Service I organised a rescue exercise of a causality from the top of this holder.
The Gas Board made sure the holder was full and we went there beforehand to place a dummy on top.
One fireman volunteered to carry the dummy up.
This was a long way as the ladders are so positioned that you have to walk half way round to find the next ladder.
The top surface is domed.
When we reached the top the chap who had carried the dummy did a hand stand and I took a photo of him. If I can find it I will show you.
Later in the day the rescue was carried out using a special stretcher which was lowered by line.
