In 1743 Sara Ploos van Amstel-Rothe bought three dolls’ houses and their contents at a sale in Amsterdam.
They were converted into two new houses, this being one of them. The other is in the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague.
Sara Rothe was a wealthy Amsterdam woman for whom the dolls’ house was an expensive hobby.
In the eighteenth century a dolls' house was not a toy; it was regarded as an art cabinet – a miniature museum.
Everything for the dolls’ house was copied as faithfully as possible at a scale of 1:10; there are 997 items of furniture and household effects.
The dolls' house and its contents reflect a luxuriously furnished home of a well-to-do eighteenth-century family. (Frans Hals Museum).
