Cromwell on his Farm, 1874

Ford Madox Brown, 1821-1893

Oil paint on canvas

Oliver Cromwell, 1599-1658, had the reputation as a ruthless tyrant.
Following the 1845 publication of "The Letters and Speeches of Oliver Cromwell"
by Thomas Carlyle, he was seen in a better light.

The inscription on the frame reads:
Lord, how long wilt thou hide thyself - for ever?
And shall thy wrath burn like fire?
Living neither in any considerable height, nor yet in obscurity.
I did endeavour to discharge the duty of an honest man.
