Attack on Chatham, 1668

Willem Schellinks, 1627?-1678

Oil on canvas

In June 1667 a naval fleet commanded by Michiel de Ruyter surprised English ships
at anchor off Chatham on the River Medway, which flows into the Thames Estuary.
In the foreground the fort at Sheerness is going up in flames, while further up the
river columns of smoke rise from various English ships set alight by Dutch forces.
