Founded as a Cistercian Abbey in 1278, Buckland Abbey was sold by Henry VIII to Richard Grenville who converted it into a house by 1576.
Sir Frances Drake bought the house in 1580 and lived there for 15 years.
It remained with his decendants until 1946.
The house was given to the National Trust and opened to the public in 1951.
