Antelope Canyon

Antelope Canyon Navajo Nation Park, Arizona

Probably most people at one time or another have seen the image of a light beam shining on a narrow canyon floor - that classic image is taken at the Upper Antelope Canyon. This small slot canyon has become the mecca for anyone into photography, and I have been wanting to see it for years. The timing of the visit was not ideal, as the light beam phenomenon only occurs from April through September, and there is hardly any light in the canyon in winter. But I can't pass this opportunity to see it this time. With high ISO and some very long exposure, I was still able to take home pictures I liked.

Lower Antelope Canyon, right across the road from its famous brother, is much less visited. It is much narrower and requires climbing down some ladders inside. But it has more light in winter, and it is a magical place. For me this is no doubt the most rewarding place for photography, and the couple of hours I spent there was a real treat. Every corner I turned, every direction I looked, there was a picture to be taken.
