On Friday May 05, 2006 I was in Detroit for a Memorial, Officers killed in the line of duty in 2005. Minutes after I took this photo, 10 miles away across the river in Windsor(Canada)P.C John Atkinson was shot and killed by two 18 year old crack heads. The first Officer ever killed in the line of duty in Windsor. He leaves behind a wife and two small children. I hope to attend his funeral on Thursady. John was a Hero in Life not Death!

Oh Scott... I can almost hear the mournful sounds of the music played... So very poignant and well done.

The photo by itself is amazingly beautiful... the story behind it makes us think. He was an hero in Life, you are right.

I remember a famous photograph by Ed Clark, of a Navy officer weeping as he played the accordion during Franklin Roosevelt's funeral. This has the same impact.

Such a sad story. Highest respect for all of you officers of the law and your families Scott. This is one incredible tribute image that says so much. God speed and protection sir.

Stunning (story and photo). I can't believe a police officer was killed in Windsor. Detroit yes, Windsor no. A perfect image. Vote.

Great picture, Scott. Ever consider doing a tribute book of police memorial photos? You have an amazing talent for capturing the mood of these occasions. Very moving...
