In the vocabulary of seamen, the "Bitter End" means the anchor rope has been fully paid out to it's limit.
Anchor ropes and cables are tied to bitts.
These wooden or iron posts sticking through a ship's deck are called bitters.
The last of the line secured to these bitts is known as the Bitter End.
