damselfly larva

This underwater photo of the larval damselfly taken in n.e. Wash. is a rare photo in my collection. Look how clear the water is for me to have taken this from the air above. Notice the external gills at the tail end, which will be gone in the air-breathing adult, and how small the wing capsules are, as the wings are folded and don't inflate until after emergence. The dragonflies or "Odonates" are amazing and ancient insects, going back over 300 million years. All Odonates have 10 abdominal segments which you can easily count in this photo; so when you want to see how realistic that popular dragonfly art is, count the segments.
