This is significant because goats were an introduced species in the islands and wreaked havoc on indigenous and endemic wildlife populations. The goats would not only scour the vegetation and cause erosion issues but also trample iguanas and their nests. Fortunately, the Ecuadorian government funded an effective eradication program that has completely wiped them out on Isla Isabela. Among the remaining invasive species on the island are feral cats which threaten the wild bird and lava lizard populations and rats which threten both iguana and wild bird nests. These invaders are testament to the ease with which the delicate balance of nature can be upset and the result of carelessness on the part of humans --even with something seemingly so harmless as bringing your cute little kitty along.
