Sankt Hans - Midsummer's Eve is the Danish name for the Saint John the Baptist, whose birth took place six months before the birth of Jesus and is set to 24 June. The date is therefore called sankthansdag (St. Hans' day). In the Nordic tradition the celebration is held the night before the day so Midsummer's Eve is celebrated on 23 June.
The day is also celebrated in other northern European countries such as England, Ireland, Germany, Poland, Russia and France. The day is celebrated mostly in the Nordic and Baltic countries, where the characteristic bright Nordic night provides the optimal conditions for a beautiful experience.
In Denmark the celebration include bonfires where a witch i burned.
