Guest1 is correct - it is the larval form of the Milkweed Tussock Moth and it is feeding on Common Milkweed. The hairs may irritate the skin of a young child but, adults are rarely affected. Guest1 is also correct about the coloration, the red or orange colors advertise that these insects are distasteful - mainly to birds.

Your Canon did a good job selecting for DOF in this great shot, I don't think I would trust my Pentax to do the same, but - we shall see - I have the same lens on the way. :)

Milkweed caterpillar. Larva of a moth. Many insects feeding on milkweed have orange or red and black coloration.

Great detail with all those hairs. Looks like a caterpillar to me - was it alive? I wouldnt touch it in any case lol
