TENERIFE NORD, GODDAMIT !

"That backup plane was fated to be in the worst aviation accident of all time. On the morning of March 27th 1977, two full planes departed for Los Palmas Airport, one was Clipper Victor, flown by Captain Victor Grubbs, a 57 year old with over 21,000 hours of experience as a pilot and with 380 passengers on board, most of them retirees eager to board the Royal Cruise Line's ship Golden Odyssey.
The other 747 (PH-BUF) was KL4805 on behalf of the Holland International Travel Group. Piloting the plane was KLM's chief 747 training captain Jacob Veldhuyzen van Zanten. The KLM flight was diverted to the Canary Islands other airport - Los Rodeos (Tenerife) after a bomb exploded at Las Palmas airport.
Captain Grubbs landed his jumbo at 1:45 or about 35 minutes after the KLM had landed.
What happened March 22, 1977, 4:28 p.m. (local time) in the fog:
Grubbs saw through the fog the unmistakable image of the lights of the oncoming 747. "THERE HE IS! LOOK AT HIM! GODDAM ... THAT SON OF A BITCH IS COMING !" Bragg F/O cried out "GET OFF ! GET OFF ! GET OFF !" as Grubbs desperately pushed the throttles wide open in an attempt to get the plane off the runway.
Almost half the PA crew, 9 of 16 - including all those in the cockpit - survived, but 326 of the 380 passngers died. All 234 passengers and 14 crew on board the KLM died in the fire. The worst aviation accident of all-time with a death toll of 583."
