3 May 2004

Formby Point, Merseyside

I went for a nice long walk in the woods today. Exploring a path that I hadn't tried before, I came across this derelict and overgrown house. I took a series of shots and this was one of my favourites. I sepia toned the image, to suit the subject, and I added the 'sun' to the shot as the subject was backlit originally and this shows in the leaves to the left, the trees and the patches of light on the ground. The real sun was kept just out of shot (to the top left) to avoid lens flare.

If you want to see the original shot, I have put the best 6 shots of this house in a gallery (derelict house), both in sepia toned & the original colour versions.

Comments will be greatly appreciated, good or bad.

Yes, this is awesome. This kind of decaying old manse is fascinating - just think of it's history, the life's spent here. If walls could only talk. Your treatment is absolutely delicious.

Hi Ray, I haven't splashed out on Photoshop yet so this was done using Paintshop Pro 7. There is an effect for adding a 'sun' to the shot and it has several variables - including brightness and opacity etc for the rays. It is easy to go OTT with it, the settings are turned quite low in this shot.

Hey, this is interesting. I imagine you only get to these places by walking!
I'd be interested to know how you got those sunbeam lines...
