So the MERGE VISIBLE command will combine these top three layers (since each of these layers has the "eye" turned on to indicate that the layers are visible). The MERGE VISIBLE command will have no effect on the bottom BACKGROUND layer, since we turned the "eye off." We should end up with just two layers: the top layer will be the newly merged sharpened layer and the bottom layer will be the original never sharpened layer.
