This PhotoShop Trick is useful whenever you have an image with exposure problems at the top, bottom, or one side. It simulates the use of a graduated neutral density filter and, as such, is useful to darken the sky in a landscape. For this exercise, my problem came from using my flash with the camera in the portrait orientation. Since the flash was to my left, the left side of the image got more light than the right. Since this flash fall-off was fairly linear, this technique saved the shot!
