Louisiana Waterthrush
A rather late, and unexpected one, found by a visiting British birder, for who this was his very first waterthrush of any kind!

22 May 2009
Prothonotary Warbler
This female was hanging around the same nest hole as the singing male pictured here, along the boardwalk at Magee Marsh. This year has been good for them there with 2-3 different pairs looking to nest in the area if all goes well.
21 May 2009
Blackburnian Warbler
Male Blackburnians may be the single biggest cause of birding in the US, old "fire-face" is certainly good at drawing in the crowds, and turning the most casual birder into a full blown fanatic.

Hooded Warbler
Female bird drawn to the Boy Scout "photo drip".

Same male as depicted elsewhere.

Black-throated Blue Warbler
This male blue sprite popped right down onto the boardwalk late one quiet afternoon, after the crowds had left at Magee.
For me this one of the best of all the colorful warbler crowd, with the lemon-headed Prothonotary Warbler being the only one that gives it a good run for its money. I desperately wanted this one out of my spring at Magee Marsh in Ohio as they are rare on Upper Texas Coast (due to their usual spring migration route being Caribbean, rather than trans-Gulf). However, to my surprise I got more than a few shots at it in High Island anyway as they had a great spring for them (and a few others too), so I chased them around for four days before finally nailing it on my final day on May 3. Only to leave the next day for Ohio where they were a daily feature for the most of the time with over 10 seen on one day! Still all the fun is in the chase, and I can now say I have seen on the Upper Texas Coast!
12 April 2009

A minimum of 7 different males were seen on "The Dome" that day (i.e. High Island).

Blackpoll Warbler
An extraordinary bumper year for Blackpolls on "The Dome", at this time in April and into May they were frequently the most abundant warbler. They soon adopted the nickname as a result of "trashpoll".
