The memorial to the Donner party. Here, on the East shore of Donner Lake in the California Sierra, the "Donner" Party spent the winter of 1846-1847. They arrived at the location late in the year and soon were unable to return Eastward or advance over the pass. This monument shows the depth of the snow that year: 22 feet or, as high as the top of the pedastle.
