Typical Subexposure

This is a typical 3-minute exposure using Daylight White Balance. I.e. this is the colour your eyes should see looking through the Astronomik UHC filter, if they were sensitive enough. Note the noisy image. Perhaps I should have used 6-minute exposures, but since this was my first attempt at tracking at 4000mm focal length, I thought that 3-minute exposures was quite sufficient challenge.

Added a few years later when I finally learnt about Skyfog-Statistics-Limited sub-exposures: At a dark site (not mine!) and f11, typical Canon DSLRs require subs at least 15 minutes long to reach the SSL regime. Moral of the story? You need fast focal ratios. The same C14 with a Hyperstar can reach the SSL regime with 30 second subs and with a DSLR having sub-5micron pixels you can even approach seeing-limited resolution! All this came later, much later.
