Film Astrophotos - from the olden days (1990s)

All taken on Fuji ISO 800 colour print film. Reciprocity failure makes it necessary to expose the Milky Way for up to 20 minutes at f2.8 to achieve "full" exposure. In a digital camera at ISO 800 the same may be achieved in about 6 minutes. However film also has a number of plusses: Film grain masks out a lot of errors in tracking, DSLRs are ruthless! Same goes for lens sharpness and tolerance for coma. Film is nicely sensitive to the red H-alpha spectral line, a major feature of pretty astropics; Canon DSLRs are very well calibrated to human vision and are thus very insensitive to H-alpha. Film is also very cheap compared to DSLRs or chilled astro CCDs. On the other hand film is grossly inadequate for planetary photos. The current king for that is the humble $100 webcam. More commentary on these facets and lots of other stuff may be perused at my primary website: http://www.samirkharusi.net/
