OTUS Magnum

You gotta have a strong stomach and a fat wallet to consider
the new Zeiss OTUS 55mm f/1.4 lens!

Ok, so here's what you get for your $3990...

You get a 55mm f/1.4 lens manual focus lens that is "no compromise" in optical
quality. And you get the Zeiss name :-)

Ok, seriously, this lens felt great in the hand. It's a pretty hefty lens,
heck it's BIG for a 55mm lens! The focus ring is buttery smooth in its
action, perhaps the smoothest I've ever felt.

I think the thing for most people is this...You're paying nearly $4000 for
what is basically a "normal" lens. By "normal" I mean the field of view,
and most normal lenses are from 50mm to 58mm give or take. And most
normal lenses are already plenty sharp.

Plus it's manual focus. Unless you're really good at it, chances are
you'll get a higher percentage of in-focus shots with an AF lens.

In all fairness to the OTUS, Leicaphiles spend thousands regularly
on their lenses and never bitch about the price. Oh wait, they do,
but they just suck it up :-)

If you want "ultimate" sharpness, then I think this is IT.
However, I'm more drawn to lenses with imperfections or "character"
not to say the OTUS doesn't have character.

As I told my friend at the show...Take your cheapo 50mm f/1.8 lens,
stop it down to f/2 or f/2.5 and you're there! :-)

Well said...it is hard to make a bad choice in a 50mm lens, they are all good. For that kind of money this thing better clean my sensor!

Guess I'll have to stick with my plastic fantastic Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens....
Excellent capture Sam! Zeiss is the best! :)

Agree with you, Sam! Rather have an old funky 50 then this. If you can't compose no lens will help... V

Well said, Sam. 3,900 bucks for a manual focus lens is quite a lot. Can't imagine that it is worth wile. As my eyesight is worsening with age, manual focus is no option for me anyway...

Love your take on this...I must say when I was a starving student in highschool I scraped up enough money to buy
a Contax slr with Zeiss lens...I enjoyed the look and feel of the thing for days before I even took a picture. V
