As the terrain flattens toward the Northwest, locks become less necessary, yet rural
roads increasingly intersect the canal's path. When this occurs, the flow of water and the flow
of traffic along the way is channeled through corrugated steel tubes. Fishing boats can pass
through the watery versions while hikers and bikers can pass through the paved ones.
