As you drive down the wooded lane and step through the entrance of this historic home two things immediately come to mind: the fabulous light and the spectacular vistas. Where else can one be in the peace of the country yet steps from town? Renowned architect Howard Van Doren Shaw built "Thorndale Manor", a property rich in Lake Forest history, in 1916.
The 10,000 plus square feet home of 6 bedrooms and 5.3 baths still retains all of its original architectural details including Shaw's trademark baskets of flowers and fruits, carved vine roping and carved rosette details. The 25 room manor includes several generously proportioned reception rooms, 5 fireplaces, several sunrooms and porches, splendid details and plenty of large windows that allow for limitless vistas of the breathtaking property.
This significant estate is situated on 6 acres of sweeping lawns, pond, pool, majestic oaks and gardens originally designed by landscape designer Jens Jensen. Another 13 acres of the original grounds are also available for purchase as 6 lots. These properties present an attractive opportunity to preservation-minded buyers or those who want to build their own homes in a prestigious setting.
My Name is Sherry Garman. I own the grandfather clock that was in Thorndale Estate. The clock was originally purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Darius Miller. Mr. and Mrs. Miller were the aunt and uncle of my grandmother, Ruth Cherrier Roberts Burke Peyton. I have had this beautiful clock completely restored. I have decided to sell it and I am hoping that the clock can make it's way back to Chicago, either in the Thorndale Estate, or to the Burlington Railroad Company. I can be reached at 509 879 6833
