The Oakland Raiders lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars 13-6 in the 2004 regular season finale in the rain and the mud at Network Associates Coliseum in Oakland.
The Raiders won the coin toss and elected to receive. Mixing the run and pass, the Raiders offense moved deep into Jaguars territory before the drive stalled. K Sebastian Janikowski capped off the 12-play, 66-yard drive with a 35-yard field goal, which gave the Raiders a 3-0 lead with 9:27 left in the first quarter.
Jacksonville was able to move into Raiders territory during their first possession, but the Raiders defense stiffened and forced a Jacksonville punt. After the punt bounced into the end zone for a touchback, the Raiders took over on their own 20. The Raiders went three-and-out, however, and punted the ball back to Jacksonville.
The Jaguars mounted a drive into Raiders territory. On 3rd and 1 at the Raiders 31, the Oakland defense stopped RB Greg Jones short of the first down marker. The Jaguars elected to go for it on 4th and 1. QB Byron Leftwich hit FB Marc Edwards for 15 yards and a 1st down at the Raiders 14. The Raiders managed to keep the Jaguars out of the end zone. K Josh Scobee came on and made a 26-yard field goal to tie the score at 3-3 with 10:15 left in the 2nd quarter.
After a WR Doug Gabriel kickoff return, Raiders QB Kerry Collins tried to go deep to WR Alvis Whitted, but the pass was underthrown and intercepted by Jags safety Rashean Mathis. Jacksonville took over at their own 19. The Raiders defense forced Jacksonville into a three-and-out. Chris Hanson's 42-yard punt rolled dead at the Raiders 31-yard line.
Two plays later, Collins was looking for Whitted again when safety Donovin Darius intercepted the pass. Darius was touched down at the Jaguars 40. The Raiders defense rose to the occasion, stopping RB LaBrandon Toefield in the backfield for a loss on 3rd and 4, taking Jacksonville out of field goal range. Hanson's punt rolled dead at the Raiders 4, where Oakland took over with 2:48 left in the 2nd quarter.
The Raiders moved the ball well, but couldn't score and punted the ball back to Jacksonville with less than 1:00 left in the 2nd quarter. Leftwich hit WR Jimmy Smith with a 1st down pass, but Smith fumbled when he got tackled. The Raiders recovered at the Jacksonville 25 with :18 left in the half. The replay official chose to review the play. The ruling on the field was upheld and the Raiders retained possession.
A 15-yard pass play from Collins to TE Doug Jolley put the Raiders on the Jags 10. Janikowski's 27-yard field goal put the Raiders up 6-3 with :02 left in the 2nd quarter.
Jacksonville managed to pick up a first down after accepting the opening kickoff of the second half. CB Denard Walker then broke up a downfield pass intended for WR Reggie Williams. LB Tim Johnson dove and caught the pass before it hit the ground, and returned the interception to the 50-yard line. The Raiders were unable to move the ball and were forced to punt. David Allen called for and made a fair catch at the Jags 12-yard line with 10:43 left in the 3rd quarter.
The Raiders kept the Jaguars from breaking out of their own end of the field and forced a punt. Gabriel returned Hanson's punt to the Oakland 27-yard line. On the next play, Collins fumbled, with Jacksonville recovering at the Raiders 21. The Raiders defense, once again, kept the Jags out of the end zone. Scobee's 22-yard field goal tied the game at 6-6 with 7:10 left in the 3rd quarter.
Scobee's ensuing kickoff went out of bounds, giving the Raiders a 1st down on their own 40. They were unable to take advantage and went three-and-out. Allen's 33-yard punt return gave Jacksonville the ball on their own 48. On 3rd and 11, WR Ernest Wilford's spectacular one-handed catch and 47-yard gain gave Jacksonville 1st and goal at the 6. Jones' 1-yard touchdown run gave the Jags the lead. Scobee's extra point put Jacksonville up 13-6 with 3:41 left in the 3rd quarter.
After Gabriel returned the ensuing kickoff to the Raiders 26, the Raiders went three-and-out and were forced to punt. RB Justin Fargas dropped Allen at the Jacksonville 36-yard line. Oakland's defense then forced the Jaguars into a three-and-out as well. Hanson's punt rolled to a stop and was downed at the Raiders 9-yard line, where the Raiders took over with 1:03 left in the 3rd quarter.
The Raiders were unable to mount a scoring drive as the 4th quarter got underway, and were forced to punt the ball back to the Jaguars. Allen returned Lechler's punt to the Jacksonville 41. The Raiders defense came up with another big stop and held Jacksonville to a three-and-out. Hanson's punt was fielded at the 17 after Gabriel called for a fair catch.
A bruising RB Zack Crockett 47-yard run moved the Raiders all the way to the Jaguars 36. Crockett continued to pound away at the Jacksonville defense until the Jaguars rose up on 3rd and 1 at the 16. Crockett was inches short of the marker. On 4th and 1, Crockett bulldozed his way to the 1st down at the 15. Crockett then blasted ahead for 9 yards to the Jacksonville 6. Crockett was dropped for no gain on 2nd and 1. On 3rd and 1, Crockett picked up the yard he needed for another 1st down. On 3rd and goal at the 1, the Raiders were called for tripping. On 3rd and goal at the 16, Collins hit Whitted for a 10-yard pickup. On 4th and goal at the 6, Darius intercepted Collins' pass in the end zone.
The Raiders got the ball back with 3:03 left in the game after a Jaguars punt. Collins kept the drive alive with a 27-yard pass play to WR Jerry Porter on 4th and 6. The officials decided the review the play. The play stood and the Raiders had a 1st down at the 31. A pass interference call gave the Raiders a 1st and goal at the Jacksonville 6. After an intentional grounding penalty, the Raiders faced 2nd and goal at the 18. Another pass interference call gave the Raiders a 1st and goal at the Jaguars 3. On 4th and goal at the 2, Collins fumbled the snap and was tackled in the backfield with :08 left to play.
