The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Oakland Raiders 12-10 at McAfee Coliseum in Oakland. WR Ronald Curry caught a 21-yard TD pass from QB Daunte Culpepper, CB Stanford Routt recorded his third interception of the season, and DT Warren Sapp and DE Chris Clemons recorded quarterback sacks.
The Chiefs won the opening coin toss and elected to receive. K Sebastian Janikowskis opening kickoff bounced and skipped into the end zone where it was fielded and downed by WR Eddie Drummond for a touchback. The Chiefs took possession at their own 20 with Damon Huard at quarterback. The Chiefs drove to the Raiders 23 before having to settle for a field goal attempt. K Dave Rayners 41-yard field goal capped a 10-play, 57-yard drive, and gave the Chiefs a 3-0 lead with 10:40 left in the first quarter.
RB Dominic Rhodes returned Rayners ensuing kickoff 22 yards to the Raiders 27, where the Silver and Black took the field for their first offensive possession with Daunte Culpepper at quarterback. The Raiders moved out to their own 46 before the Chiefs defense forced a punt. Drummond called for an made a fair catch of Lechlers 40-yard punt at the Kansas City 14.
The Chiefs moved to their own 27, but SS Michael Huffs pass break up on 3rd and 8 brought the drive to an end. CB Chris Carr fielded P Dustin Colquitts 46-yard punt and was dropped immediately at the Oakland 27.
The Chiefs held the Raiders to a three-and-out and Lechler came on for his second punt of the day. Drummond returned Lechlers 59-yard punt nine yards to the Kansas City 30. The Raiders returned the favor with a three-and-out for their own as CB Nnamdi Asomugha blew up a screen pass for a six-yard loss on 3rd and 10.
Carr muffed Colquitts punt and Kansas City recovered at the Raiders 29. The Chiefs moved to the 14 before the Raiders forced a field goal attempt. Rayners successful 31-yard attempt capped a 6-play, 16-yard drive and gave Kansas City a 6-0 lead with 14:01 left in the second quarter.
Carr returned Rayners ensuing kickoff 24 yards to the Raiders 24. Kansas City forced a three-and-out and Lechler came on to punt. Lechlers 40-yard punt rolled to a stop and was downed at the Kansas City 33. The Raiders defense forced another three-and-out of their own. Carr returned Colquitts 54-yard punt 24 yards to the Oakland 39.
The Raiders drove the Chiefs 17 before facing 4th and 1. RB LaMont Jordan was stopped short of the marker on a running play and Oakland turned the ball over on downs. The Chiefs took over with 5:55 left in the second quarter.
The Raiders defense allowed one first down before forcing a punt. Carr called for and made a fair catch of Colquitts 49-yard punt at the Raiders 19. The Raiders moved out to their own 31 before the Chiefs forced a punt. Drummond fielded Lechlers 54-yard punt and the eight-yard-line and returned it 11 yards to the 19. The Raiders forced a three-and-out and forced the Chiefs to punt with 1:06 left in the second quarter. Colquitts 45-yard punt rolled to the Raiders 31-yard line where Oakland took over with 55 seconds left in the half. The Raiders were unable to move the ball and Lechler came on to punt.
Drummond fielded the 51-yard punt and returned it five yards to the Kansas City 17. A Huard kneel-down brought the first half to an end.
Rhodes returned the opening kickoff of the second half 24 yards to the Raiders 27. The Raiders were unable to move the ball and were forced to punt. Drummond returned Lechlers 50-yard punt five yards to the Chiefs 27. The Raiders forced a three-and-out, thanks in part to a nine-yard sack by DT Warren Sapp.
Carr returned Colquitts punt but a block in the back penalty backed the Raiders up to their own five-yard line. The Raiders were held to a three-and-out and were forced to punt. Drummond fielded Lechlers 58-yard punt at the 27 and returned it to the Chiefs 39.
The Chiefs next drive ended when CB Stanford Routt picked off Huards deep pass down the right sideline at the Raiders seven-yard line. Curry was unable to handle Culpeppers pass on third down and the Raiders were forced to punt. Drummond returned Lechlers 64-yard punt to the 27 and an illegal block in the back penalty backed Kansas City up to their 17. The Chiefs drove to the 11 thanks in part to a 54-yard RB Larry Johnson run. Rayner came on and missed a 40-yard field goal wide left, and the Raiders took over at their own 20.
Culpepper then connected with WR Jerry Porter for a 59-yard bomb to the Chiefs 21. Culepper then hit WR Ronald Curry in the back of the end zone for a 21-yard score. Janikowskis PAT gave the Raiders a 7-6 lead with 2:37 left in the third quarter.
After Janikowskis ensuing kickoff was fielded and downed in the end zone for a touchback, the Raiders defense forced a three-and-out. Carr returned Colquitts punt to the Oakland 37. The Raiders were unable to move the ball and were forced to punt. Drummond returned Lechlers boot to the Chiefs 25. Two plays later, on 3rd and 10, Huard connected with rookie WR Dwayne Bowe for a 58-yard strike to the Raiders 16.
Johnson capped a 9-play, 74-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion attempt was no good. The Chiefs led 12-7 with 11:30 left in the fourth quarter.
Carr returned the ensuing kickoff to the Raiders 30. The Raiders drove to the Chiefs 19 before having to settle for a field goal attempt. Janikowskis 37-yard kick was true and cut the Chiefs lead to 12-10 with 5:49 left in the 4th quarter.
Drummond fielded the ensuing kickoff in the end zone and took a knee for a touchback. The Chiefs drive came to an end when DE Chris Clemons sacked Huard at the Chiefs 39 on 3rd and 9. Carr fielded the punt at the Raiders 26, where the Silver and Black took over with one timeout left and 1:46 left on the clock.
The Chiefs secured the victory when Jarrod Paige intercepted Culpeppers pass for Curry with 35 seconds left.
The Raiders fall to 2-4 on the season and hit the road next week to face the Tennessee Titans in Nashville, Tenn.
