Jim Farley 1924 - 2007

Jim Farley , fellow angler, passed away at his home town of Wilton, CT on March 29, 2007. He was 82.
I first met Jim in Islamorada, Florida in 1992. He personified sports fishing as dedication and camaraderie. On a later trip, Jim came down to Florida although his leg was aching; he wanted to hear our stories of fishing and record our catches for another great bulletin board at the City House and another great story for the Winged Foot.

Jim maintained close ties with the Anglers and in 2005, was awarded the prestigious George C. Corti Memorial Award for the Millennium Spirit of Angling.

Our condolences to Jim's wife, Irene, and his family.
We will miss him. -Ricky Young

Below is the obituary for Jim:

James P. Farley, 82, Advertising Executive Who Led Globalization of Brands

James Parker Farley, who helped a blue chip roster of companies such as Coca Cola, Uniliver and Esso enter into and build strong brands in Asia Pacific in the 60s and early 70s, died peacefully on March 29 in Norwalk, CT. He was 82 and a retired executive of McCann-Erickson Worldwide, for which he worked from 1956 to 1984.

He joined McCann-Erickson in New York in 1956 as an account director before moving to Tokyo in 1962 as part of the joint venture team that built McCann-Erickson-Hakuhodo, one of the earliest and most successful American-Japanese advertising partnerships. In 1964, he became President and CEO of the venture; in 1978 he became Executive Vice President McCann-Erickson Worldwide with responsibilities for the Pacific Region; returning to New York in 1980 until his retirement in 1984.

Jim was often known to say "Some guys had a career, I had an adventure." Of his many accomplishments, he was especially interested in and proud of his work with the Jardine, Matheson and Co., to open China to foreign advertisers and introduce global marketers to the Chinese marketplace and growth potential. He had served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and he found returning to China to represent U.S. businesses nearly 40 years after delivering a tugboat for the US Navy to Shanghai be of high point of his life.

Among his many retirement activities, Jim was an active supporter of Project Liberty Ship and its restoration of the John W. Brown on which he served during WWII.

An avid fisherman, he was an active member and past board member of the New York Athletic Club’s Anglers group and for many years enjoyed writing the club's fishing stories for The Winged Foot magazine for NYAC members.

Jim, the son of James Joseph Farley and Margaret Parker, was born in Newark, NJ on September 16, 1924.
He was educated at St. Peter's Prep and Rutgers University (Class of 1949). His career started with General Electric Co. in 1949.

A longtime resident of Wilton, CT, Jim leaves his beloved wife of 56 years, Irene and their four children: James and daughter-in-law Petra and grandchildren Devin, Colin and Carling of London; Catherine and son-in-law David Elkind and grandson Daniel of Greenwich, CT; Robert and daughter-in-law Maribeth and grandchildren Katherine and Patrick of Wilton, CT; and Margaret of Westport, CT. He is also survived by his brother and sister in-law Thomas R. and Nancy Farley of West Orange, NJ, his sister Maryrose Swift of Upper Montclair, NJ and an extended family of nieces and nephews.
