Actually I took this photo of the F-14 Tomcat at the Air Races in September 2000. They had an F-14 this year but I didn't get any good shots of it. |
I'm not much of a breakfast eater --
I only had some to be sociable. -- :-) |
As you can see, we had box seats this year.

Here's the younger portion of our crew, posing with Dago Red, the P-51 which won the Unlimited Gold Race. |
There was so much wind and dust in the air that I thought the race may be postponed. Here's another view of Dago Red after having won the Unlimited Gold Race from some distance down the ramp. |

A liquid-cooled Rolls-Royce Griffon V-12 engine, an engine used by British Fairey Fireflys.

Here's the Rolls-Royce Griffon V-12 engine mounted in a Fairey Firefly. Note the tubular engine mount which holds the engine in the airplane. Or, as a friend correctly observed, holds the airplane to the engine!

Amazing mechanism allows the British Fairey Firefly wings to be quickly and compactly folded back to save space during carrier operations.

Two of the younger members of our group pose with the Rare Bear, a highly modified F-8 Bearcat. At a 481 mph average speed on the course in 1991, "The Bear" held the all-time speed record for Unlimited Racing. |
The F-18 "SuperHornet". The SuperHornet can be distinguished from the Hornet by its angular square intake. |
Here's the noisy end of an F-15 Eagle. |
A pair of F-104 Starfighters. These planes no longer serve in the military. 2002 is the first time I had seen any of these jets at an airshow. The engine has a distinctive resonant "howl" just above the idle setting. |
Strega (Italian for "Witch") is the name of the P-51 which was trying to catch the Bear when the speed record was set in 1991. It was one of the best races we had ever seen and backs up my observation that the speed and excitement of the race is determined by the second fastest airplane. This is Strega's support van in the pits. |
Smoke and Thunder's support and transportation, all ready to leave after the show. |
Smoke and Thunder, a jet-powered dragster, races from a standing start (and sometimes beats) airplanes which are already in flight when they cross the "start" line. |
 The burgers are ready. |
