Reno Air Races 2002

The Air Race Gang was really looking forward to the races this year, having lost our opportunity to go last year due to September 11. We were not disappointed, and here are some images I took during the weekend of September 15 and 16.

Actually I took this photo of the F-14 Tomcat at the Air Races in September 2000. They had an F-14 this year but I didn't get any good shots of it.

Here's the younger portion of our crew, posing with Dago Red, the P-51 which won the Unlimited Gold Race.

There was so much wind and dust in the air that I thought the race may be postponed. Here's another view of Dago Red after having won the Unlimited Gold Race from some distance down the ramp.

Here's the Rolls-Royce Griffon V-12 engine mounted in a Fairey Firefly. Note the tubular engine mount which holds the engine in the airplane. Or, as a friend correctly observed, holds the airplane to the engine!

Amazing mechanism allows the British Fairey Firefly wings to be quickly and compactly folded back to save space during carrier operations.
