Lockheed designed the YF-12A as a high-altitude, Mach 3 interceptor. This design is the immediate ancestor of the SR-71 Blackbird, and successor to the secret single-seat Lockheed A-12 reconnaissance aircraft built for and operated by the CIA. Lockheed built only three, and this one is the only one that still exists.
