Apteryx mantelli
The national symbol of NZ, Kiwis are flightless birds that thrive only where there are not
any mammalian predators. We took an boat ride one evening to a remote part of Stewart Island
where we found three or four Kiwis foraging on the beach. Genetically, the Kiwis found on
Stewart Island are most closely related to the North Island Brown Kiwis, but genetic studies are ongoing. Our guide painted this bird with his flashlight.
