From March 5 to March 8 I was privileged to attend a workshop hosted by the talented bird photographer
Alan Murphy in southern Texas near Alamo (in Hidalgo County). There I was exposed to his creative methods for
exercising control over the content of bird images. The pictures in this gallery are a sampling
of those I took during this exciting and informative workshop.
You can find many species of birds in southern Texas that are not found in other parts of the US.
Some of the birds that can pretty much only be found in the Southern Rio Grande Valley
are the Great Kiskadee, the Golden-fronted Woodpecker, the Crested Caracara,
the Long-billed Thrasher, the Olive Sparrow, the Green Jay, the Buff-bellied Hummingbird,
and the Altimara Oriole. We also photographed some more common birds, including the
Northern Cardinal, Pyrrhuloxia, Red-winged Blackbird, Killdeer, Northern Mockingbird, Greater Roadrunner,
and we
were fortunate to catch a Great Horned Owl.
