Crossing the Sands of Morecambe Bay, UK, requires the knowledge and skills of an appointed King's Guide to adeptly navigate the quick sands and fast flowing tides. Before the arrival of the train this was the most direct route; today this walk is led as a charity event. Like historical travellers, including pilgrims to the monasteries and early visitors to the Lake District, walkers employ the route of the Guide for safe passage across the sands, through the river and to the other side.
