Geminids Meteorite Shower 2023

Breadalbane, NSW, Australia

QC144140Resize.jpg

This is a single image taken using the LIVECOMP feature of Olympus & OM System cameras. The duration was greater than 20min in 8 sec segments. The camera was mounted on a Star Adventurer GTI tracking mount and the polar alignment was based on a 3 star alignment method. A test shot was done with an Olympus 300mm f4 lens for 1 min. If no star trails at this focal length then at 12mm focal length, I should be able to shoot at 24min or less and have no star trailing. It worked!!! Unfortunately only the brightest of meteorites were recorded as they zip through the frame in less than 2 sec and the stars are illuminating the same sensor pixels for 8 seconds as not moving. Visually similar or less brightness than a star but many stops less brightness. Also in the image, you can see Pleiades & Jupiter.

The location was a Bortle 2 sky and the moonset was at 9:48PM. Usually no traffic with cars on high beam after sunset due to high risk of collision with kangaroos.
