Rare to see in the wild, but limited to southern New Guinea and the state of Queensland in Australia.
This flightless bird has rather large and powerful claws that it can use to defend itself. In a seemingly reversal of roles, females can be aggressive during mating season with other female cassowaries but normally keep their distance from people. Of course the males who nest and rear the chicks, will defend his chicks fiercely but will usually run from danger. Attacks have been fatal for dogs and people.
In captivity, they will help themselves to your food. A stolen sandwich always tastes better than ripe fruit on the ground.
This cassowary was approx 1.6m tall and eyeballing me to see if I had any food was a little concerning. They can be up to 2m in height.
The female is both larger and more colourful.
