Lynton Convict Depot, Built 1856.
Use discontinued 1870s
Crumbling, now on privately owned land.
Current owner is maintaining historic buildings but not able to restore due to intensive labour to match original convict made building techniques.
Original limestone mortar was made in a slurry by heating limestone over burning wood and dumped into water where further heat was generated and it breaks down into a thick liquid. Then worked in situ into the blocks, but concrete mortar techniques is quite different and far less time consuming.
