Aurora

These images were all taken in Abisko, Sweden.
Having stood waiting and watching (& enjoying) this natural phenomena, I commend those that dedicate themselves to capturing these events in temperatures like the inside of your freezer.

A few tips
Get your gear as ready as possible so no messing about in freezing weather conditions with gloves off in the cold
Buy a few extra batteries, not necessarily poor quality eBay stuff sourced from non OEM makers that is not designed to cope with the cold
Use manual focus - pre-focus this on a planet or bright star using Live View on X10 magnification.
Do whatever you can to stay warm! Except stay in bed that is !!!

The quality of the gear becomes critical at low temps. I had 2 Chinese manufactured Canon clone batteries fail at the low temps, the original Canon manufactured batteries are both still fine. The lens had a covering of snow from intermittent snow flurries but no problems other than a panic attack from the owner. All other equipment was fine. Operating gear with mittens was difficult. Even Canon's RC6 Remote Switch was difficult but without the mittens so easy. Something solid like a stomp box seems appropriate for these conditions.

Standing on snow & ice in sub - zero temperatures for hours on end, I got so cold I could not talk as my facial muscles would no longer respond. I was incoherent - well more than normal & without the benefit of alcohol. The air temp was -21C with a wind chill factor making this -27C. I did this for two consecutive nights & on the third night, gave up after 1 hour of waiting for the display to improve.

Of course you will always get a "you should have been here last week" ... or even "wow, you should have seen it 15 minutes ago" ... You should also be aware that the cloud cover is more important than the Aurora forecast. If it is cloudy where you are then it may be clear somewhere else nearby.
