Factory pilot on the Atlas GP40, aren't those actuating hoses super realistic?? |
Break away pilot plate from .010 styrene, DW #AH-302 drop elbow air line, DW #MU-266 actuating hoses and DA #1505 MU stand |
View of the rear pilot, details are the same except for using the stack Atlas plate |
Another view of the rear pilot |
I sanded the front of the Atlas pilot to get a nice smooth surface to attach the styrene pilot plate to |
Another view of the front |
Notches cut on the pilot for the uncoupling lever, added uncoupler lever extensions made of .012 brass wire. |

Oh look, a pic of the rear |
You will never guess....A pic of the rear |
On the prototype the nose grabs are on the firemans side, I placed a piece of masking tape over the nose |
Poked holes through the tape where the original nose grabs were located |
Relocated tape to the firemans side and drilled the holes in the appropriate locatons as marked by the holes in the tape...Easy! |
Plugged original holes, I heated up some round styrene stretched it out and cemented in place |
Trimmed plugs flush and sanded |
Top view showing holes plugged and sanded |
Grabs relocated to the firemans side of the nose |
Another view of tthe nose |
On the prototype the front pilot plate is pretty dinged up, here is the beginning of that process |
Added the equipment box and sinclair antenna |
Just a view of the rear with body taped on |

The prototype had the kick plate on the first step replaced as it was yellow, so I tried to match that up as well. |

I used Ceramcoat brand Acrylic "Blue Jay" full strength to get the very light fade in places |
