Great gallery. The title "Turtles" should be changed to "Not Just Turtles" or "Turtles with Color". Some great compositions and color in these shots.

To Guest: It is indeed a real issue getting too close to turtles on the Big Island, in recent years they have greatly increased in population and they can be found at most of the beaches now, either sleeping on the sand or feeding on seaweed under water. This is really fortunate because they became almost extinct in the 70's, but at the same time overactive real estate development and human population have both dramatically increased recently (to my dismay), to the point that it is difficult to predict how the turtles will react to this. The shot was taken at Honaunau Bay (near the Place of Refuge), a very popular snorkeling and scuba diving place that even some guided tours visit. I was following this peacefully swimming turtle from a decent distance and saw it suddenly stepped on by the unwitting snorkeler at right not knowing it was approaching. That area was right at the place were swimmers enter the water from a steep lava shelf, talk about crowding! The turtle continued on not showing any sign of distress but of course those snorkelers got really excited about their "discovery" and followed it briefly.

As you say above "keep in mind that they are protected and should not be approached too closely." Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles are a THREATENED Species protected by both state and federal law. IT IS ILLEGAL TO DISTURB THEM IN THE OCEAN OR ON THE BEACH and fines can be imposed for doing so.

What's your secret? I've never seen turtles in shallow water. I've seen them when snorkeling in Maui but they are always in about 30 -40 feet of (not always so clear anymore) water. Great photos, and such clarity. I went to the Place of Refuge last summer but strangely saw no turtles that afternoon. I'll definitely check out Kiholo Bay next time.
