Ohio Meets Mississippi

Cairo, IL

The Meeting of the Mighty Rivers

Today we continued our roots tour leaving Missouri for Kentucky and Tennessee. We paused at Cairo, IL to gawk at the location where the Ohio River (coming downstream from Mindy’s Pittsburgh) joins the Mississippi (which starts clear up in Minnesota where Greg Harp snaps his pictures.) The barge shown here is leaving the Ohio and turning upstream on the Mississippi. Behind it, in the distance, the Big Muddy flows on down to New Orleans passing by Gayle, Coleen et al.

Nice shot Robin. Yep, some of that water probably started downstream not too far from my house. The Crow River that flows through town eventually empties into the Mississippi near the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul.

Then it flows into the Gulf and around the Caribbean where Dave Royal is sailing around, then into the Gulf Stream warming us all up in the UK - thanks, guys!!!

I've always enjoyed your love of history and geography. I was traveling this weekend and thought of you...how you would always tell us the history of some geographical location we were passing by.

I love the word confluence... I used to especially like it when Tim McCarver would talk about Pittsburgh Pirates Three Rivers stadium being at the confluence of the of the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers to form the Ohio River.

NIce shot here. You must really be enjoying your roots tour.

Very nice to see this. Yes, those barges will probably sail about 2 footballs fields from my house.
