Lens Comparison

The Canon EF 17 – 40mm f/4 L lens is my next lens to show. On the 5D its strength and weaknesses show. The top image is 17mm. The bottom one is 40mm.

On a 5D this is a true wide angle lens which is wonderful; however if you look carefully at the top one you will see there is vignetting.

Good comparison! The 5D with that lens on it is "truly wide". In this shot, I quite like the effect on the sky..wouldn't change a thing. Agree with Liza, PT Lens is great, although I'm using Nikon Capture NX to make corrections now.

Hey robin, this is a very cool comparison. I'm wondering, you didn't mention it but I think you do know about ptlens? If not, you should download and install it. Its a true lens saver.

It has excellent colors and sharpness. If the vignetting is bad in a shot you could get DxO pro to correct.

Nice comparaison Robin.

Yep, the vignetting does add interest to the sky !! Still looks good though.

Yes, the sky in the top image is great!!

Terrific series. The top image doesn't bother me a bit--I've seen filters that specifically add that effect--and PS can remove it... Beauty, as they say, is in the eye of the beholder...

I bought mine for $500.00. I absolutely love it. I'm with Gary, I love the vig... It kinda gives the sky a nice effect.

What do you expect from a $700 Canon lens? Perfection? :^)

However, I do know that the word vignette can mean a short literary sketch or play. In photography it can mean to soften the edges. I love both vignettes below.

I know nothing of what anyone below speaketh so I shall say I am enjoying the photos very much.

Actually, my understanding of vignetting has not to do with clarity, but with brightness. As stated by Kodak..."A fall-off in brightness at the edges of an image, slide, or print. Can be caused by poor lens design, using a lens hood not matched to the lens, or attaching too many filters to the front of the lens." This is usually most often in the corners.

Nice illustration of the lens performance.

Kent apparently your MAC doesn't have access to a dictionary. Vignetting, in photography, any process by which there is loss in clarity towards the corners and sides of an image

Interesting. Yes, there is vignetting, but I actually like the sky better in the top image. Of course, that's easily adjustable in PS.

The smart ass comment attributed to Kay is actually mine, in case you hadn't guessed. L&K - Kent

OK, I give up - what is "vignetting". I want to be able to speak in these esoteric terms so I can appear smart and "with it"
