November 14: Shooting the Convention

Minneapolis, MN

Last night during the opening reception 110 of my "candid" shots were projected on large screens in the hotel ballroom. They were rotated through several times, alternating with a DVD showing scenes of the Minnesota Northwood's.

I am having a good time, and it is truly a thrill to have colleagues and friends coming up with compliments.

I still need to better understand the limitations of my flash. On about 70% of my images in Photoshop I need to move the white levels slider to the left by about 15 – 20%. Generally the things I am self critical about seem to disappear when projected on these huge screens.

This association of Organization Development professionals is a warm and supportive group of people, just like you all on Pbase!

I know they are all enjoying your wonderful portraits and they must be the hit of the convention.

Your photos are excellent, Robin. It is no wonder that you are getting good feedback. I am however curious what you mean about the white level slider. Are your photos too dark? Are the colors off? I do know that without a high speed battery, the flash gets sluggish and wont output at full strength but I am not sure that's what you are talking about.

Basically what Bob said (sorry didn't read everything before I posted)

This is a good one, saved or not.
Indoors, I usually use manual at iso100 (or 200) with a SS of 200 (the X-sync support up to 250 I think) with the aperture as you normally would use) and keep the exp comp on the flash at plus 1/3 stop. Seems to work when I remember.

I like this shot, and the whole collection from the conventions, seems you've had a busy week!

Robin, I just went through a similar problem, try manual mode set the iso @200, shutter around 80-150, f- stop for depth of field, and +1/3 exposure on the flash and tone it up or down as needed. I was supprise how well it worked, this was a tip given to me by Juli Valley.

Your say, "...Generally the things I am self critical about seem to disappear when projected on these huge screens..."

I'd say, "Your internal-critique is the reason your pictures turn out so well".
