May 30: In Their Honor

Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial, San Diego

The Bivouac of the Dead

The muffled drum's sad roll has beat
The soldier's last tattoo'
No more on life's parade shall meet
That brave and fallen few;
On Fame's eternal camping ground
Their silent tents are spread;
But Glory guards with solemn round
The bivouac of the dead

-Theodore O’Hara, 1847

Great capture Robin! And a wonderful tribute. I'm with you that it's no longer a memorial; rather a 3-day holiday - not cool.

@ Jeremy... yes... the star burst is real. I walked around the cross until I saw the sun streaming through. The final result of the star burst surprised me!

Great tribute Robin. Is that a natural starburst? Excellent composition.

Wonderful tribute, Robin. I think it's so sad that Memorial Day has become a three day celebration of the arrival of summer, rather than a tribute to fallen soldiers and sailors as it was intended. Sure, we pay lip service, but so many people simply plan barbeques and visits to the beach and never stop to even THINK about the brave men and women who made it possible. Thanks also for posting the link to the history of the day; it was fascinating!
