The Gull

As you may have deduced I am getting interested in still life and portrait photography. Today I bought a velvet cloth to hang as a backdrop. My new lens also will help (inside and out.) Hmm… now how much were those AlienBees packages Karen was talking about? ;-) ?

Here is my very first effort with the new backdrop and lens.

Canon EOS 20D ,Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
1/60s f/5.6 at 40.0mm iso200 full exif

other sizes: small medium large original auto

By gully that's good !! I have a couple of it's downunder cousins on my first day of May PaD too.

Well, I like Colleen's title suggestion, and love the picture! You're going to have a ball with that new L-class lens!

The sunflowers are beautiful against the black backdrop!

This gull sure has found its niche in your PaD gallery, huh? Love the way the color of the sunflowers pop against the stark black background...I must try this.

Good job Robin!

I admire your efforts of pulling together light, subjects, props and composition in order to make better pictures although your gull might be more in a photogenic mood should you decide to spoil the bird and invest in a posing table :-)) Have fun and stay inspired.

Very professional looking (except for the barstool).
I see your gull made it back safely from Orange County.
17-40L or 50mm 1.4 is my next lens, not sure which yet.

There's that gull again. You should have titled this "To All the Gulls I've Loved Before."

That gull sure is getting a workout...how much does he charge an hour?..:) The lens looks like it is working excellently!

Gonna have to get me some of that black velvet...

I like Cliff's title. I'll be watching your endeavors with great interest. Best way to learn something.

That's great Robin-the back velvet really soaks up the light, yes??
I'm still trying to figure the whole thing out, better 1 step at a time, and lucky my company paid for Most of the lights I have (I added the softbox). One hint: heavy duty air cushioned stands, to hold any heavier modifiers.
Canon just has to love our 'hobbies', heh.

I believe the correct title is: "Still life, with Gull". He does look rather imperious, like he has decided belongs in the picture!
Guest 30-Apr-2005 13:50
Hey, that`s great, finding your seagull "still life"!!!
Guest 30-Apr-2005 13:47
If there's a gull in it, is it still "still life?"

Nice shot and sunflowers - one of our favorites (from our growing up in Kansas days!)
