January 26: How Sweet It Is!

Ventura,CA

I have traveled to every State of our Union and many foreign countries in the course of my work over the past thirty plus years. I love travel; however a secret I learned long ago is to always find things to enjoy beyond the “gig.” Another secret is to only stay overnight in one hotel per trip! Don’t haul your butt all over the countryside stopping in too many spots during one week. Above all, find things to do that are enjoyable while there.

Last night, after a major change in plans I wound up driving to Ventura. I spent a really excellent evening on the Ventura Pier watching people, the ocean, and the sky. This was followed with a rich bowl of New England clam chowder inside the pier’s restaurant. Truly, “How sweet it is!”

I’ve posted a few shots of the ***VENTURA PIER*** taken last night.

“Why did I drive,” you ask? “I thought you were going on the train?” Well, the idiots at Amtrak failed to inform me when I booked my ticket (online) that the segment between Los Angeles and Ventura was closed because of a damaged roadbed from all the rains. Duh!

Ironically, early this morning there was a major RR accident in Los Angeles which killed several and injured over 100. I would have come up yesterday, however it does give one pause.

Nice shot Jackie....ummm I mean Robin. Glad you are fine and close calls such as that does make one pause and think. I envy your ability to travel, it has always been a dream of mine, in the mean time, I will enjoy your pics of your journeys.

Doug, to give Amtrak full credit, I just found out tonight when I returned that they tried to call me, but I had made a typo on my area code when I typed it in online. And a woman called to tell me this and to aplogize. I feel mollified!!!!

Nice title...! Interesting story... It would have been really easy to get mad at the Amtrak ticket agent, and fire off a letter to management..! :)

This has my vote. I picture you sittin' in some burger joint, waiting on chow. You took your camera with you as always. Sittin' there ponderin', you spot this container of sweetness. Now comes the special part...you make an artistic image of it. Good job. Glad as hell you weren't on that train, Robin.

Red white and blue, amazing what can be done with sugar.
Guest 27-Jan-2005 00:59
Soooo... beyond the "gig" you hunt for souvenir sugar packets?

I agree that is the way to do it when you travel! Glad you are safe!

Raw sugar for me please, Robin. That rail accident was no accident it seems...innocent people have suffered from one mans stupidity.

Very good travelling advice you've given there and your photo really is symbolic.

Relieved to know your PaD had nothing to do with any diet you were on - the Ventura Pier shots are interesting - looks like a nice place to visit. Enjoy your road trip!

I saw the news and hoped that everyone in your area was safe.

You're right. If you don't build in one fun day, travel can be a real pain.
