November 14: Starting My ABC's - A is for Asprin

Rancho Bernardo, CA

I've succumbed to the challenge of creating a new alphabet letter each day. Today I'm posting it as my PaD to kick the process off.

This was fun to do and I learned a great deal in the process. (That is the whole idea, right?) I put the spilled apsrin and bottle on a reddish brown footstool with the sunlight coming in the window from the right. There were several post processing steps to whiten up and sharpen up the asprin tablets while turning the reddish brown background to black.
Putting the baby asprin in the shape of an "A" came to me later.
No, doing this did NOT give me a headache ;-)

Thank heavens for lou on this one. He never fails to have an instructive remark. Anyway robin, wonderful photo here. I am feeling so left off the alphabet soup train but I just don't have time to do it right now. Maybe when my pad is complete in 45 days I'll have a little more time to play.

don't eat them all at once!!

Just want to add here that Filipendula ulmaria or Spiraea ulmaria is the same and is know commonly as Meadowsweet as a popular name. Latin names are not evrybody's thing anyway.

An interesting product from which many people know that bitty while they take some allmost for every little pain.
Aspirin is an extract of the bark of the willows (Salix alba, S. fragilis, S. pentandra , Salix purpurea, S. daphenoides )
This bark contains indeed Salycilalcoholglycosides like Salicin, Salireposid, Salicortin, Fragilin, Picein and some other flavonoides, Phenolcarbonacids and tanins.
Salicin is transformed in the intestins to Salicilalcohol and Glucose and split in the liver to Salicylacid.
The bark of the willow has been found of interest in pharmacy when Johan Andreas Buchner made an examination of it in 1828, and Francois Leroux was the first scientific to isolate Salicin in crystal form in 1829. In 1838 the Italian scientific Raffaele Piria was the first to isolate Salicic Acid out of Salicin.
Salicic acid can be found in many other plants like Filipendula Ulmaria and also in the common stiching nettles. Aspirin is troughout the world as popular and consumed as is Coca Cola. Note that the birth year of Aspirin was 1897 when Felix Hoffmann, a chemist of the Bayer Chemicals added an acetylgroup to it with the goal to reduce the negative side effects on the intestins reported before.
The name Aspirin stands for Acethylsalicic acid (A) and for the most used plant they take it from which is Spiriae ulmaria (Spir).
Nice photo, Robin and allways a good theme to talk about as well.

well done! Aspirin is your basic wonder drug... and still one of the best pain relievers!

Very creative and nice crisp focus... the little baby asprin A is a clever touch.

You're a braver man than I! I'm struggling to keep up with my PAD! Good idea, though, I'm really interested in seeing what you come up with.
