May 26: Birthday (1937)
Well, as they say in the Air Force, this is the day I left the hangar and rolled out onto the ramp.
Anxious to get into the world, I was several weeks premature and was quite tiny. My Mom and Dad named me Robert after my paternal grandfather; however, I was so small that when they noticed a robin on a tree outside the hospital room they decided to call me Robin. I have been called that ever since!
A few facts about that time:
May 26, 1937 was the day before the Golden Gate Bridge opened, and it had been only about three weeks since the Hindenburg had crashed and burned at Lakehurst. Franklin D. Roosevelt was beginning his second (of four) terms as President. Just a month before the Germans had bombed the Spanish village of Guernica, later made famous by Picasso’s painting. The world was in the depths of a depression that gripped people worldwide. As a result, the world teetered on the edge of World War II. Seemingly not very auspicious time to be born. Nevertheless, I like how my life has turned out, and I celebrate today with you all.
My thanks to Penny Roots for supplying the image of a robin, to Dr. Timmins the attending physician for snapping me within minutes of my birth, to my parents for having me, and to you all for reading, commenting and being so sweet with your input.
